Tired of Being Criticized for Poor Math Proficiency & Achievement Levels?
Bill Hanlon’s knowledge of math, his passion, humor and understanding of the needs of all
students, struggling students, students living in poverty, brings a uniqueness to the K-12 math professional development he provides for teachers and administrators. Teachers welcome Bill’s no nonsense, common sense approach based on a building a success on success model and a what works is work mentality which teachers readily accept and parents greatly appreciate.
His content based math strategies are embedded with his “6+1” instructional strategies. Those strategies link preparation to instruction, student notes, homework assignments, test prep, and assessments. The “+1” is the importance of student-teacher relationships.
Too many of our teachers and administrators do not understand that the greatest differences between the math taught in elementary to high school are vocabulary, notation, and the pattern recognition that makes math much easier to learn and do. That lack of understanding results in too many topics being taught in isolation which makes math more difficult for students to learn.
That’s the reason why his professional development is open to all K-12 teachers and
administrators. Those linkages bridge the gap between elementary and secondary math which allow teachers to introduce new topics in a familiar language which makes students more comfortable, provides teachers an opportunity to review, reinforce previously learned math or address deficiencies as they teach their assigned curriculum.
Then, with initial instruction, Bill uses simple straight-forward examples that work, that clarify, and don’t distract students with needless arithmetic. That approach results in students believing they can do math and allow students to see patterns that lead to procedures, formulas or theorems that explain the “why” behind the math they are learning. Recognizing the patterns makes math a lot easier to do. He then uses repeated scaffolding to reach grade level expectations.
Bill’s professional development also contains a Marketing Plan to increase parental involvement, support and a belief that we are setting their students up for success. The plan emphasizes specific strategies that are incorporated in the “6+1” strategies. He employs instructional strategies that provide students the repetition they need to be successful, to build familiarity and comfort levels, and acquire nuances by comparing and contrasting that impact student decision-making in doing problems.
